Orthodox Group for Rick

A press release sent out today is announcing the forming of the Orthodox "Jews Pick Rick" group.

Sen. Rick Santorum and Sen. Norm Coleman in Boro Park during the 2004 Republican convention
The group's goal is to spread "Rick’s conservative message to Boro Park, Flatbush, Monsey, Lakewood and Five Towns," spokesman David Shor said. The group points to Santorum's pro-morality stances, as well as his hawkish pro-Israel and Anti-terror positions.

It also points out that: "Santorum is promising to directly court the Orthodox Jewish vote as the primaries come to New York at the end of April. This contrasts with Mitt Romney, whose Jewish advisers are primarily secular Jews. These statistics are reflected in the list of delegates from New York which both campaigns have -- there are several distinctly Orthodox names in Santorum's list with much fewer in Romney's. Santorum has a longstanding relationship with Agudath Israel, and the Orthodox community in his home state of Pennsylvania speaks highly of him."

Santorum rankled Jews when his campaign office in South Carolina sent out Hanukkah greetings with Old Testament passages. His campaign later disavowed these cards. With a Jewish group in place, he will know to do better with the Pesach greetings.

At least 6 Orthodox Jews are listed as delegates and alternates for Santorum: Menachem Lieberman delegate, and Cheryll Lieberman alternate delegate, district 10; Ariel Kohane, alternate in district 8; Joseph Hayon, alternate in district 9; and Menachem Balkany and Avi Rosenberg, alternates in district 11.
