Strong Focus by both Parties on KJ Congress District; Redistricting may hurt Hayworth

Recent moves by republicans and democrats show that both parties consider NY-19, a district that includes Kiryas Joel, to be up for grabs this year. The GOP chose Hayworth for the first 2012 response to the President's weekly radio address. This can help raise her profile in the district. Meanwhile, Wappingers Falls Mayor Matt Alexander will hold a fundraiser next week, headlined by one of the best-known dems, Barney Frank of Massachusetts.

NY-19 switched parties twice, in 2006 and 2008. Last time Eric Cantor personally visited KJ to ask for their support, while President Clinton also phone the village leaders. KJ held back their endorsement until the 11th hour (mastering a Hikind art of riding the political wave...).

Before challenging Hayworth, the Dutchess Town Mayor will have to win a primary against a Westchester cardiologist and Cortland Town Board member Dr. Richard Becker who want to run on the democratic line against Hayworth.

Redistricting may hurt Hayworth’s chances. According to the Record, “The long-awaited new maps are likely to take the district now known as the 19th deeper into Westchester, leaving… Putnam County home and other mid-Hudson counties in a new district.” Putnam is solidly republican, while West-Chester is turning blue in recent years.

The news district, though, may save Hayworth from a primary fight with Greg Ball, a state senator from Putnam County, who is attacking her a an out-of-touch millionaire.

Talking of redistricting, it's also noteworthy that Gary Ackerman's district may be merged with Bob Turner's, which mean a tough fight between a mighty incumbent and a new star – another exciting round for NY-9. Also, OP believes that Ed Towns - whose 2nd opponent Hakeem Jefries will announce his candidacy on Sunday - maybe gerrymander away from Jewish Williamsburg.
