Fidler vs. Storobin
The gray lady finally caught up on the dying-down Fidler-Storobin neo-Nazi controversy:
The controversy does not appear to have hurt Mr. Fidler, who recently received three prominent endorsements, from former Mayor Edward I. Koch, Senator Charles E. Schumer and Gregory Davidzon, a Russian immigrant and political power broker. Still, Mr. Fidler said he regretted the reverberations of his remarks about Mr. Storobin. “I beat myself up on a regular basis for giving him the gotcha moment,” he said.
Super-Jewish
Both candidates wrote pieces for the Brooklyn Daily on the redistricting process. Fidler calls for a return to the drawing board, while Storobin likes the ethnic lines that created am Orthodox Jewish district, but is expressing sympathy with the complaints against slicing up the Russian communities in several districts.
Jefferies vs. Towns
Charles Barron, who is also running against Ed Towns, attacked Hakeem Jeffries for accepting “blood money,” from the Police Benevolent Association. “You can’t criticize stop-and-frisk while taking money from the PBA,” he said, chastising the NYPD for some of their controversial shootings, Politicker reports.
“My legislative record of accomplishment on stop-and-frisk and police reform issues is unimpeachable. The ‘blood money’ reference is strange and perplexing coming from someone who is an unabashed apologist of Muammar Gaddafi, Robert Mugabe and other rogue international dictators who have ruled with blood-soaked hands,” Mr. Jeffries said, referring to Mr. Barron’s strong support for the regimes of Mr. Gaddafi and Mr. Mugabe.
Dilan vs. Velazquez
Eric Dilan haven’t declared yet, and it’s far from certain that he will run against Rep. Velazquez, but her supporter – JoAnne Simon, who lost to Steve Levin for City Council, but survived a machine challenge against her district leader position - is already in full attack mode.
Turner vs. Lancman
Bob Turner wants to redraw his district to include the Five Towns area, Politicker reports. His declared opponent, Assemblyman Lancman, also belongs to an Orthodox community. Conceding that his Orthodoxy – viewed with his support for the anti-marriage bill – was a liability for Turner’s former opponent, David Weprin, Lancman told the 5 Towns Jewish Times that while he also supported the same bill, he haven’t invoked his religion while doing so.
Kevin Parker’s Pay Back?
State Senator Kevin Parker, who had several run-ins with the NYPD, is proposing a law to impose more oversight on the Police Department. It calls for the city’s Department of Investigation to appoint an inspector general to oversee the Police Department. State Senator Eric Adams is one of the few sponsors.
Adams Declared
State Senator Eric Adams declared that he’s running for Borough President. He is far behind in fund raising. A win, would make him the first African American Borough President of Brooklyn. The other declared candidate, Carlo Scissura, a special adviser and former chief of staff to Borough President Markowitz, reported raising $127,000 in his first 100 days as a candidate — the fastest of any Brooklyn Borough Hall hopeful in history, according to the Campaign Finance Board.
Others believed to eyeing a run to replace BP Markowitz, who’s term-limited out of office in 2013, include state Sen. Daniel Squadron (D–Brooklyn Heights), Assemblyman Nick Perry (D–Flatbush) and City Council members Dominic Recchia (D–Coney Island) and Letitia James (D–Fort Greene
