The interest for the 34th council seat of Diana Reyna – which currently includes several hundred Jewish residents on the edges of Williamsburg’s Hasidic neighborhood – is growing. Politicker already has 4 names interested in the seat: Reyna’s Chief of Staff Antonio Reynoso; Borough President Marty Markowitz’s aide Jay Otaño; District Leader Maritza Davila, who lost to here in a 3-way hotly contested democratic primary in 2009, and then opposed her unsuccessfully on the WFP line in the elections; and Tommy Torres, a teacher active in Democratic politics who worked on Bill Thompson’s mayoral campaign.
Ms. Davila is coming in with a huge advantage, having name recognition from the last race and the support of Vito Lopez, who helped Reyna win before they broke off and Reyna became a prominent member in the anti-Lopez movement.. A multi-candidate race will split the anti-Lopez vote and be to Davila’s advantage (much like Steve Levin cruised to victory in a 5-candidates race in the neighboring district).
