Hayon Haven't Determined on Cymbrowitz Rematch

A press conference today by Assemblyman Steve Cymbrowitz to protest a NYT piece that derides Russians, was explained by Politicker that it may be a way to solidify Russian support after the Strong Storobin showing in the neighborhood. Cymbrowitz only received 57 percent of the vote in 2010 versus 43 percent for his opponent, Joseph Hayon, who only spent $615 for the campaign. On the Special election night, Gatemouth already put Cymbrowitz on notice that he is in trouble.

Joseph Hayon

Hayon played a – perhaps 'the' - major role in Storobin's strong showing in the Orthodox community, the area where he had his strongest support. An emboldened Hayon could have been a formidable opponent to Cymbrowitz. One thing that works in Cymbrowitz's favor, though, is his vote against the marriage redefinition bill that differentiates him from Fidler (who is strongly in favor of it) and Weprin.

And we have more good news for Cymbrowitz: when we last checked with Hayon, several days after the elections, he told us that he hesitates if to run against Cymbrowitz this year. This is what he wrote:

"I am not sure if I will run this year. The last minute redistricting, special elections, presidential primaries, and other factors took away my focus on a 2012 race."

He still has time to make decide, he noted: "The petitioning for Assembly doesn't start until June (unless they change the law before June)."

Update: Hayon just reiterated that he isn't sure he's ready for another run, citing personal reasons and also to see if groups who promised to help with fund-raising will follow through.
